The Digital Hub and NCAD partner to explore important societal themes
In the spring of 2021, the National College of Art and Design (NCAD) and The Digital Hub announced a new partnership with the co-hosted Digital Cultures Webinar Series which was convened by The Digital Hub’s former artist-in-residence and NCAD Alumna, Elaine Hoey and NCAD lecturer, Dr. Rachel O’Dwyer. It featured key industry figures, academics and thinkers, students and alumni and it aimed to broaden this discussion on Artificial Intelligence and examine both opportunities and challenges it creates for artists, entrepreneurs and communities. In 2022 The Digital Hub and NCAD once again partnered on a series of talks, titled Turning Ground. The hybrid series focused on socio-ecological futures in urban environments and included talks and workshops with international and national experts. The series was convened by Seoidín O’Sullivan (Artist-in-Residence at The Digital Hub 2021/22) and NCAD lecturer and artist Gareth Kennedy.
‘Do Algorithms Dream of Electronic Shapes?’ commissioned
The Digital Hub, in partnership with acclaimed artist and inventor Robin Price, commissioned this unique art project in the form of a nightly laser projection on St. Patrick’s Tower that explored Dublin 8’s relationship with social media and data. At its core was the question how we see social media, and how it sees us. Running from dusk to dawn, up to 1500 interpretations of images were displayed each night. To round-off the project, an expert panel discussion on how digital technology has already shifted society and what may yet come was held in March 2022.
Market returns to The Digital Hub campus
In March 2022, The Digital Hub welcomed We LOVE Markets to Dublin 8 with a monthly public market. The market vendors believe in the potential of city and neighbourhood markets to infuse urban areas with new energy and social and circular economic activity. The idea of markets being key public gathering places that highlight local culture and reinvigorate a vibrant city centre aligns closely with the work of the DHDA.
The Digital Hub partnering with Dublin Dance Festival
Dublin Dance Festival and The Digital Hub teamed up in 2019, to bring the Missy Elliot Project to The Digital Hub, when a group of young girls were mentored by female artists of colour over the course of a week. This live performance and digital exchange project, saw the young women work with an expert team of choreographers, performance artists, musicians, and designers to make a VR experience which imagines a radical new future.
Artist-in-Residence Programme Launches at The Digital Hub
This programme allows artists to bring their unique perspectives to life at The Digital Hub and contribute to The Digital Hub’s programmes and community initiatives, as well as the artistic and cultural life of the area. The Digital Hub’s Artist-in-Residence Programme, operating since 2018, is a vital element of that intersection.
The Digital Hub Hosts Culture Night
The Digital Hub was proud to take part in Culture Night for a three year period from 2017 to 2019. Throughout the three years we developed and built exciting collaborations with both Virgin Media Dublin International Film Festival and The Dublin Flea Market. This tied in perfectly with our re-engagement with culture and creativity at The Digital Hub.
The Digital Hub Hosts Dublin Flea Market
The Digital Hub was delighted to host the Dublin Flea Market at Digital Depot in the summer of 2019. It was a welcome return to Dublin 8 for the Dublin Flea, which was previously held in nearby Newmarket Square. The Dublin Flea Market first opened its doors in November 2008 and since then it has grown into one of Dublin’s most loved markets with stalls selling everything from vintage clothes to secondhand bikes, retro furniture and more – anything a bargain hunter would expect to find at a flea market.
‘this is not a table’ by Robin Price
In 2018, The Digital Hub invited the public to visit our campus to interact with a digital art installation called ‘this is not a table’. ‘This is not a table’ is a digital art display by British artist Robin Price. The installation is a ping-pong table designed to create a variety of stunning displays with every bounce of the ball.
